You're flipping through photos from a family function and something looks off. Your front teeth seem shorter than you remember, and the edges look flat. Nobody else has mentioned it, but you've started noticing. Worn down teeth are more common than most people think, and not every case needs treatment. At Dr. Pithadia's Dental & Healthcare Clinic in Sector 14, Kharghar, we help people work out which kind they have.

Signs Your Teeth Are Worn Down, and Why It Happens

Teeth wear slowly, so the change is easy to miss. Look for edges that have gone flat or slightly see-through, teeth that look shorter than they used to, small chips along the biting surface, and a yellowish tint where the harder layer underneath has started to show. Some people also notice that hot and cold drinks sting more than before.

There are three usual causes, and many people have more than one.

  • Grinding or clenching. Often at night, so you may not know you do it. A partner hearing the sound, or waking with a tight jaw, are the common clues.
  • Acid. Fizzy drinks, citrus, frequent sipping of sweet chai, and acid reflux all soften enamel over time.
  • Brushing too hard. A firm brush and a lot of pressure can wear the neck of the tooth near the gum.

Grinding is a common cause, and stress sits behind a lot of it. The NHS lists worn-down or broken teeth, sensitivity and a painful jaw among the signs of grinding, and names stress and anxiety as the most common cause (NHS guide to teeth grinding). If your days in Kharghar are long and stressful, that may sound familiar.

Normal Wear or Damage? When Worn Teeth Need Repair

Here is a plain answer. Some wear is normal. Teeth rub against food and each other for decades, and a little flattening by middle age is expected. The question is whether the wear is still slow and painless or whether it's picking up speed.

When it can wait

If the edges are only slightly flat, nothing hurts, nothing is chipping and you're happy with how your smile looks, you may not need any treatment at all. Many people simply need a check, some advice on stopping the cause, and a note in their file so we can compare at the next visit. We would rather tell you that than book you in for something you don't need.

When it shouldn't wait

Come and have a look if any of these apply:

  • Teeth are noticeably shorter than a few years ago
  • Sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet that keeps getting worse
  • Chips or cracks that keep appearing
  • A bite that feels different, or food that no longer breaks down as easily
  • Jaw or face muscles that ache in the morning

Once enamel is gone it doesn't grow back, and the softer layer underneath wears faster. So the sooner we see it, the more of your own tooth we have to work with. If your main symptom is jaw soreness rather than the teeth themselves, our guide to what a prosthodontist does explains why that's worth bringing up too.

Worn Teeth Repair Options, From Bonding to Full Mouth Rehabilitation

The right repair depends on how much tooth is left and how many teeth are involved. These are the usual steps, from least to most involved.

Tooth-coloured bonding. For mild wear on a few front teeth, resin can be added to rebuild the edge. It's quick and keeps most of your tooth intact, though it can chip or stain over the years and may need touching up.

Crowns. When a tooth has lost a lot of height or is cracking, a crown covers and strengthens it. Our post on crown and bridge cost in Kharghar explains what drives the price. Exact pricing depends on the material, the tooth and how much rebuilding is needed, so you'll get a clear figure at the consultation, before anything starts.

Veneers or onlays. For teeth that are worn but still sound, thin ceramic coverings can restore shape while removing less of your tooth than a full crown.

Full mouth rehabilitation. When wear is widespread, repairing one tooth at a time often fails, because the bite itself has changed. A planned, whole-mouth approach rebuilds the teeth together so they meet evenly. Our full mouth rehabilitation page shows how this works step by step, and our crowns and bridges page covers the individual restorations.

And no, repair doesn't mean giving up your favourite crunchy snacks from the stalls near Kharghar station. Once things have settled, most people go back to eating normally.

Why a Prosthodontist Checks Your Bite First

This is the part we feel strongly about. Rebuilding worn teeth without dealing with the reason they wore is like repainting a wall that's still damp. If you keep grinding, the new surfaces take the same punishment, and a ceramic crown can chip or crack under that force.

So at Dr. Pithadia's Dental & Healthcare Clinic we start with the bite. Dr. Urvashi Pithadia, BDS, Prosthodontist and Cosmetic/Aesthetic Dentist with 9 years of experience, looks at how your teeth meet, how your jaw moves, the state of your gums and what the X-rays show before anything is rebuilt. A prosthodontist plans how the whole mouth works together, not only the tooth that looks worst. Gum health matters here too, which is why we look at the gums first before any restorative work.

If grinding is the cause, a custom night guard is usually part of the plan, worn after the repair to protect it. We'll tell you plainly if we think you need one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can worn enamel grow back?

No. Enamel has no living cells, so the body can't rebuild it once it's lost. What we can do is protect the remaining tooth, stop whatever is causing the wear, and restore lost shape with bonding, a crown or a veneer where needed.

What are the signs of worn down teeth?

Flat or shorter-looking edges, small chips, a yellow tint where the layer under the enamel shows, and rising sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet. A tight jaw in the morning is another clue that grinding may be involved.

Do worn teeth always need a crown?

No. Mild wear with no pain often needs only monitoring and a change in habits. Bonding can rebuild small losses. A crown is for teeth that have lost a lot of height or are cracking.

How much does worn teeth treatment cost in Kharghar?

It varies with how many teeth are involved and which repair suits them, from a small bonding repair to a full mouth plan. Exact pricing depends on case complexity, so get a quote at the consultation after we've seen your bite.

Do I need a night guard after repair?

If grinding caused the wear, usually yes. A custom night guard takes the force instead of your teeth or new restorations. If acid or hard brushing was the cause, we'll focus on those habits instead.

Can I stop my teeth wearing down without treatment?

Often you can slow it. Cutting down on fizzy drinks and frequent acidic sipping, using a soft brush with light pressure, and managing stress or night grinding all help. A dental check will confirm what is actually driving your wear.
